Obesity
is defined as a chronic medical condition, characterized by excess body fat,
which puts extra load on critical organs like the heart and kidneys and
therefore increases risk of heart disease, blood pressure and diabetes. Orligal (Generic Xenical) is effective
in the management of obesity and helps obese individual lose weight and also
prevents regaining of the lost weight. It is helpful not only in reducing the
risk of chronic ailments, but also improves self esteem and restores confidence
in affected individuals.
Mode of Action
Orligal (Generic Xenical) works by blocking the absorption of
fats from the meals you consume. The active ingredient in this medicine is
orlistat, which inhibits the action of an enzyme called lipase (produced
primarily by the pancreas). Lipase breaks down the fats in the food and aids
their absorption. So when lipase activity is inhibited, fats cannot be absorbed
by the body and are excreted as such in the stools. Orlistat blocks the absorption
of fats by as much as 25% fat from the meal. This significantly limits the
calorific intake of the body and aids in weight loss.
Dosage and Administration
Orligal (Generic Xenical) is available in hard gelatin capsule
formulation containing 120 mg of the active ingredient. The recommended dosage
is one capsule three times a day along with the main meals that you consume.
It is necessary to use this medicine with a
well planned nutritionally balanced diet for the best results. As the medicine
works by reducing absorption of fats by the body, it should not be combined
with a fat rich diet, where the chances of unpleasant side effects are high. It
is best that the meal be planned in such a manner as to provide nutrition
evenly from proteins and carbohydrates and a smaller quotient of fats.
It is
possible that Orligal (Generic Xenical)
may impair absorption of certain fat soluble essential vitamins like A, D and E
and so a daily multi-vitamin supplementation is recommended during the course
of treatment.
Side Effects and Contraindications
Common
side effects associated with Orligal
(Generic Xenical) include headache, abdominal pain, flatulence and oily
discharge from the rectum.
The
medicine is contraindicated in patients with impaired gall bladder function, chronic
malabsorption syndrome (food and nutrients not being absorbed effectively) and
history of chronic pancreatitis. In people suffering from type II diabetes, hypoglycemia
may occur on use of this medicine. It should not be used in patients suffering
from any kind of eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia or those who have an
underactive thyroid function. Safety for
use during pregnancy and breast feeding has not been clearly established.
